Shared ownership is a great way to get onto the property ladder if you don’t have a large deposit but can afford the typical payments relative to the property you’re considering.

As your income increases over time along with your savings and your normal payments having repaid some of the original mortgage you will likely be in a position to staircase the property and start to acquire a larger percentage ownership of the property.

You ideally should staircase as soon as you can afford to as delaying taking action to staircase could result in you not ending up being able to obtain 100% of the property if it increases in value over time beyond what you can afford.

Also typically each year the rent you’re paying on the share you don’t own is increasing so by staircasing you can reduce the rent you pay and increase your ownership with a larger proportion of your monthly payments going towards repaying your mortgage and further increasing your ownership of the property.
